般若波羅蜜多咒
The Prajñā-Pāramitā Mantra

gate gate pāragate pāra-saṁgate bodhi svāhā ||

*This mantra is in the well-known Heart Sūtra. See sūtras no. 15–17 on this website. The word prajñā means higher wisdom. The word pāramitā means gone across to that shore of bodhi (enlightenment), opposite this shore of birth and death. This mantra affirms the crossing—from “gate gate” (gone gone) to “pāragate” (gone across to that shore), then to “pāra-saṁgate” (completely gone across to that shore)—and ends with “bodhi svāhā” (enlightenment hail). We must unfold higher wisdom in order to cross from this shore of birth and death to that shore of enlightenment.
